If you haven’t heard: Soon after it was announced that Mika Abdalla would be one of the two romantic leads for Off Campus season 2, her rep broke the news that she and her fiancé, fellow actor Jake Short, had called off their engagement. In a statement to Us Weekly, the rep said, “Due to recent interest in Mika’s personal life it would feel remiss to not address that her and Jake are no longer together. They continue to support each other and remain on friendly terms, and kindly ask for privacy and respect.”

Of course, if you had no idea that Mika was even dating someone (much less engaged!), then you’ve come to the right place. It’s time to review Mika and Jake’s very low-key relationship, from when they first met to why they split. Starting with…

March 2021

Mika and Jake start filming the Hulu comedy Sex Appeal, which is when they first hit it off. During a (now-infamous) 2024 episode of his Sit and Chat podcast, Jake opened up about how he suggested to Mika that they meet up to rehearse their more ~intimate~ scenes together.

“He brought a bottle of wine to go over the scenes,” Mika told Jake’s co-host Bradley Steven Perry, later adding, “And I still have the bottle of wine.”

…and just one day later, Mika seemingly soft-launches her relationship with Jake with a few coupley-looking photos.

Along with Bradley Steven Perry’s now-wife Natasha Bure (aka Candace Cameron Bure’s daughter), Mika stops by Jake’s Sit and Chat podcast for a special “Couples Therapy” episode. And when Bradley asks Jake how he would describe Mika, he gives a…questionable response.

“I have two words,” Jake says. “I’d be like, ‘Some bitch.’”

In return, Mika says (in reference to Natasha), “So, she’s the best person [Bradley] knows, the best person he’s ever met, and I’m some bitch?”

July 2024

Jake appears on The American High Podcast, where he claims that Mika asks when they’re getting married “every day” before playfully proposing to Mika (who is just off-camera).

Once Jake confirms that she “said yes,” host Jeremy Garelick quips, “Most romantic proposal of all time.”

That same month, the two take a cute trip to Utah together, and Jake shares some pics on Instagram.

During her own appearance on The American High Podcast, Mika opens up about meeting Jake on set.

“I came over just to say hi and we ended up talking—not about the script, just talking and getting to know each other for hours,” she says, adding that she found him “really cool and sweet and great.”

May 2025

Jake’s manager Brian Medavoy posts a photo of Jake and Mika to Instagram…apparently in honor of their engagement.

“An awesome day yesterday celebrating the next chapter for my longtime client, Jake Short and his fiance Mika Abdalla,” he captions the since-deleted post. “From set to real life – watching your journey has been a joy. Here’s to forever.”

A few months later, Mika makes her last appearance on Jake’s grid, and she even comments, “i don’t even know what to say,” to which he replies, “I don’t even know what you said first.” It’s giving banter!

The two also attend “Actors Rising” presented by The Actor Awards and ELLE, though they don’t pose together on the red carpet for a pic.

Season 1 of Off Campus drops on Prime Video, catapulting Mika into the public eye. As sources for DeuxMoi later reveal, she and Jake decided to call off their engagement shortly before the series premiere.

June 2026

A rep for Mika breaks the news that she and Jake called it quits.

“Due to recent interest in Mika’s personal life it would feel remiss to not address that her and Jake are no longer together,” the rep says in a statement to Us Weekly. “They continue to support each other and remain on friendly terms, and kindly ask for privacy and respect.”

A DeuxMoi source adds that Mika was the one to end the engagement. “They were a really great couple it just didn’t work out and they remain on good terms,” the insider claims.

Then! A chatty source for Daily Mail spills even more deets, saying, “There wasn’t a dramatic breakup or a major fight. Instead, as Mika’s career looks to grow into something special, she has found herself increasingly focused on professional opportunities rather than settling down and building a life with someone.”

The insider adds, “Jake was ready to move toward starting a family in the next few years” but apparently, he would “take her back in a heartbeat.”
